The Guyer Opera House
The Guyer Opera House opened more than 120 years ago. It is named after Lewisville, IN physician, Dr. Oscar K. Guyer. In 1893 there was a gas explosion that triggered a fire in the business district in Lewisville. Many buildings in downtown Lewisville were burned to the ground.
In 1900, Dr. Guyer persuaded a group of local citizens to build an Opera House. It was built over a block of the city where the earlier buildings were destroyed. Dr.Guyer died March 1901 at the age of 49. He did not live to see the opening of the Guyer Opera House. He is buried in the Lewisville Cemetery.
It has been reported that in the spring of 1923, six year old Newell Calpha was accidentally shot at The Guyer during a firearms demonstration. He was watching the exhibition from the third row of the theater when he was shot in the forehead. He was carried downstairs to his father's dry goods store where he died without regaining consciousness.
In 1985 The Guyer was remodeled after sitting vacant for years. It has been and has continued to be an active theater with volunteers performing plays throughout the year.
There have been many reports of paranormal activity throughout the building. Many people have reported seeing shadow figures in the dressing room area. There have been reports of hearing growling noises in the lighting room.
